Through the lens of Equity and Inclusion: Preventing Bullying of LGBTQ+ Students

This session explores bullying prevention through a lens of equity and inclusivity, centering the lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ students. Educators and administrators will examine how identity-based bullying, invisibility, and lack of affirming support contribute to harmful outcomes—including increased risks of suicide, anxiety and depression. The Presenters will highlight how minority stress uniquely shapes these risks for LGBTQIA+ youth. The presentation provides practical tools to foster affirming school environments where every student feels safe, valued, and supported—socially, emotionally, and physically. Essential Question: How can we create inclusive and affirming learning environments that prevent bullying and reduce both harmful coping behaviors—like tobacco and vaping use—and mental health risks such as suicidality, anxiety, and depression among LGBTQIA+ students?

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the unique challenges LGBTQIA+ students face related to bullying, harassment, and exclusion.
  • Recognize how minority stress and lack of inclusivity contribute to elevated risks of suicidality, anxiety, and depression among LGBTQIA+ youth.
  • Explore inclusive language, policies, and practices that prevent bullying and support student well-being.
  • Equip educators with culturally responsive strategies to foster a safer and more affirming school climate.
  • Integrate health and wellness messaging into bullying prevention efforts, with a focus on tobacco and vaping prevention and mental health supports.

Key points:

  • LGBTQIA+ youth are disproportionately affected by bullying, leading to higher rates of suicidality, anxiety, depression, absenteeism, and substance use.
  • The role of “minority stress” and lack of visibility in shaping student behavior and risk factors.
  • Identity-based bullying is often underreported or normalized—staff must be trained to respond sensitively and consistently.
  • Tobacco/vaping companies have historically targeted marginalized communities, including LGBTQIA+ youth.
  • Prevention starts with representation, inclusive curriculum, safe spaces, and trusted adult relationships.
  • Language matters: affirming pronouns, mental health support, and inclusive health education are protective factors.
